Group Gestures: Practice with common hand gestures

Young Businesswoman with Her Finger on Her LipsIn my sixth video in the Language Notes series, I address nonverbal language, specifically hand gestures. The topic is definitely embedded in culture. The gestures I cover are commonly used in the U.S. Should you decide to cover other gestures or gestures used in other countries, the video can easily serve as either an integral or supplemental component of your lesson.

Here are some suggestions.

  1.  Find out if students are familiar with the necessary vocabulary to discuss hand gestures. See if there is a shared understanding of some common gestures. My Language Notes_6_classroom slides will help you do this.
  2. Use the video presentation to expand students’ knowledge of common hand gestures used in the U.S.
  3. Put the most common and least offensive ones into practice with the help of my Group Gestures_handout.
  4. Encourage students to review using my interactive exercises.
