Writing Tip: Teaching the Importance of Time Frame

When students write a narrative, one type of mistake I tend to see concerns verb tense. Students lose focus of what time frame they’re in and choose an inappropriate verb form. Have you observed these kinds of mistakes as well?

Practice makes perfect, as they say, so calling students’ attention to time frame as they proofread and revise their own writing is important. A useful exercise to develop this sensitivity is looking for inconsistencies in other texts. If you’d like to challenge upper level students to identify errors with verb forms and heighten their awareness of time frame, please check out my Time Frame_handout.

    Dear Jennifer, hi.

Thank you for your awesome article on the importance of time frame while writing or even speaking about – let’s say – a past event. I am going to forward your great article to my students, if you don’t mind.

    Thanks a lot!

    Have a great weekend.

    1. Hello Alexandre! I hope the activity will give you something to talk about with your students. Perhaps generating their own narratives would give them a chance to focus on the importance of time frame. Happy teaching! – Jennifer
