My Online Projects

Videos

  • I post English language instructional videos on YouTube under the channel name English with Jennifer. Please encourage your students to subscribe! Lessons for all levels are organized by playlists: Grammar, Vocabulary, Writing Skills, Intonation, Email, Oral Reading Fluency, and more. The basic membership program offers written practice tasks on my community tab.
  • As of November 2018, I started sharing short videos on Instagram. I focus mainly on listening, speaking, and pronunciation.

Let’s see if others chime in.
In the meantime, some older postings of mine offer speaking activities to practice grammar or vocabulary. A few involve physical movement that might have some relevance to your work. One example:

    Hi, Jennifer
    😀

I love your blog and your youtube page.
I was wondering how hard or complex it is to have private online instructions?
Is there a book that I could read related to this?
I would like to learn on how to become a online tutor.

    thanks
    Mary

    1. englishwithjennifer says:

      Hello Mary!
When I was preparing to teach through Skype, I contacted some fellow YouTubers who I knew were offereing private lessons. I wanted to get a feel for the range of approaches used to teach via webcam. I also wanted to hear about adminsitrative aspects like payment and scheduling. If you’d like to know more about that side of teaching online let me know. Otherwise, another option could be for me to create a category on this blog for online instructors. Right now I’m mostly focusing on traditional classroom teaching. I do have tips for adapting to the virtual classroom for private lessons. BTW – DimDim is another alternative to Skype.
      Regards,
      Jennifer

What a great resource you have here! I thought you might be interested in some real-world examples for your blog. Many teachers in high school and college are using text from Terribly Write in their classroom and as homework assignments. Terribly Write features the grammatical gaffes, mangled spelling, and terrible typos of the professional writers and editors at Yahoo. I hope you’ll take a look and see if it contains info that might be applicable to your blog, too. http://terriblywrite.wordpress.com

    1. englishwithjennifer says:

Thank you for sharing the link. It certainly underscores the need to proofread!

Hi Jennifer, I enjoy your blog and videos much, I am a 13 yr K-12 teacher that has recently gotten a TEFL and I am completing my Masters in English as a Second Language in Nov’11. I want to ask how I can get started teaching English to students online. If you can provide some pointers and dictrection, I would be grateful.
    Thank you.
    Hafsah

    1. Hello Tanya,
Welcome to the world of ELT and the many online possibilities. 🙂 I’m not certain what format you’d like to use for online instruction. There are options for content creation (videos, exercises, etc.) and then there’s live instruction. For live instruction, I’d suggest starting off one-on-one to become comfortable with the experience of teaching in a virtual classroom. You’ll find ways to transfer some of your classroom skills to the Internet, but in other ways you’ll have to adapt and be creative. For example, what materials will you use to teach? If students don’t have the textbooks you have, you’ll have to use online resources and/ or create your own materials. I recommend joining EnglishCafe as a teacher to become connected to a community. Then you can immediately present yourself and announce your availability to the community of learners, some of whom are willing to pay for private lessons. You’ll also be able to join discussion boards and connect with other online ELTs. Feel free to send me a friend request if you join EC. My username is JenniferESL. Good luck!
      Regards,
      Jennifer
